Location: Dillingham, AK Contract: $11 Million Owner: Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation Synopsis: In late 2014, Roger Hickel Contracting began performing pre-construction services, assisting in the design of the new Dillingham Dental Clinic. By May of 2015, a contract was signed and construction began on the foundation and shell of the building while the remaining design was completed. Construction continued from that date, until complete on Labor Day of this year, aside from a brief winter shutdown period. The 16,000SF facility, which houses 2 open laboratories with 9 operatory stations and 3 closed operatory suites, was completed for just under $11 million, on time and under budget, with zero lost time accidents.
Location: Palmer, Alaska Contract: 17 million Owner: University of Alaska Synopsis: The Glenn Massey Theater, built for the University of Alaska at the UAA Matsu Campus in Palmer, opened in early 2015. The 30,000 square foot, 525-seat performing arts theater houses multiple dressing rooms, a costume shop, scene building shop, green room, and multiple restrooms for both performers and the public. There building also features office space for the staff running the theater and a large mechanical room containing state of the art air handlers to heat and cool the theater, while minimizing any noise that would detract from the performance. An orchestra pit is also included, hidden just below the stage, with the option for a future orchestra pit lift, which will hoist the musicians up to stage level during their performance. This building boasts modern interior finishes including; glass tile and stone countertops in restrooms, 20 foot tall fritted curtain wall and lyptus wood wall panels in the lobby, sapele wood panels and venetian polished plaster in the theater, and a custom Meyer Constellation Speaker System with Electro-Acoustical Enhancement capabilities.
Roger Hickel Contracting self-performed all concrete placement, exterior siding, doors and hardware installation, much of the civil work, and miscellaneous finish items. Major subcontractors on the project included; Redi Electric, Slayden Plumbing and Heater, Bucher Glass, Rite-way Roofing, Elite Acoustics, Commercial Contractors, Goliath Construction, Swanson Steel Erectors, Protech Theatrical Services, and Pyramid Audio and Video.
Location: Anchorage, Alaska Contract: $5,000,000 Owner: Municipality of Anchorage Synopsis: The new Fire Station #5 in Spenard was put out to bid by the Municipality of Anchorage in the Spring of 2012. The 12,804 SF one-story building was designed by Kumin Architects.
Location: Fairbanks, Alaska Contract: $14,000,000 Owner: NC Machinery/CAT Rental Synopsis: The new NC Machinery rental store in Fairbanks, Alaska consisted of a 50,000 SF two-story building. This design-build project was designed by Don Dwiggins and included a showroom, parts counter, service bays, warehouse, and office areas. The building also featured structural steel, concrete tilt-up panels, metal joist/decking, and a 10 ton overhead bridge crane.
Contract: $17,000,000 Owner: Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center Synopsis: This 42,000 SF, three-story building major building components consist of concrete foundations with concrete slab on grade, structural steel structure, bar joists & concrete slab on metal decks, metal stud exterior/interior wall framing, architectural exterior metal wall panels, aluminum framed exterior windows and, EPDM roof. RHC self-performed the sitework package, concrete, exterior metal wall panel siding, doors & hardware, structural supports for Owner supplied equipment, and all division 10 specialties.RHC assisted ANHC and the A/E team during the design phase including constructability evaluations, value engineering for cost effectiveness & sustainability, MOA permitting, cost estimating, scheduling, and assembling the construction team including subcontractors & vendors. After the design and costing phase was completed, RHC was able to meet ANHC’s budget and was awarded the contract for the construction phase.
