| Descriptive: This project combines "park and ride" vehicle parking and heated self- storage facilities. The project is located near Anchorage International Airport and includes 10 acres of paved parking, 250 covered parking spaces and 65,000 square feet of storage buildings which are heated using an in-slab radiant system. The improvements also include an entrance Gate House and 3 stall "Bus" Garage. Eighteen separate building permits cover the work. The entire project is constructed on a closed Municipal landfill. Roger Hickel Contracting proposed the innovative use of shallow actively heated foundations in order to minimize excavation and the resultant disturbance of the existing landfill cap. We proposed a design build value engineered alternate foundation and roof system for the covered parking area resulting in a savings to the owner of $440,000. We self performed all earthwork which included the placement of over 100,000 tons of classified fill. We also formed, placed and finished the concrete work, installed all reinforcing steel, erected the covered parking structures and self-storage buildings. In order to complete the parking improvements prior to winter shut down of the asphalt plants, we worked 12 hours per day and seven days per week. The improvements were completed prior to the airport holiday season. |
