| Descriptive: Roger Hickel Contracting developed an 11 acre site in South Anchorage, constructed a new 67,000 square foot grocery store on it, plus improved a ¼ mile of 88th Avenue. The site had previously been used for gravel extraction in the 1950's and 1960's. The project design required approximately 30,000 cubic yards of classified soils be used to fill and grade the site. We recognized prior to bid time that some portion of that need could be met from on-site sources - an innovative approach that saved the Owner several hundred thousand dollars. On-site civil work included demolishing several existing buildings, undergrounding existing overhead electrical and telephone utility distribution lines on and around the site, water/sanitary/storm piping, plus curbs, gutters, sidewalks and asphalt paving. Off-site civil work included totally re-building 88th Avenue between Abbott Road and Toloff Street, adding a traffic signal to the intersection of 88th and Toloff, as well as relocating an existing traffic signal pole and base at 88th and Lake Otis Parkway. The building is founded on standard concrete perimeter strip footings and interior pads. Perimeter CMU walls support roof joists. Interior tube steel columns support joist girders, steel joists and metal decking topped by a fully adhered EPDM roof membrane. Interior construction and finishes are similar to other Carr's Quality Centers with the exception that the roof structure is exposed instead of having an acoustic ceiling. The project was completed on time and well within the Owner's budget. |
